What’s a song that changed your life?
There was a summer I couldn’t get “Holocene” by Bon Iver out of my head. Not because it was happy. Because it wasn’t. It sounded like driving with the windows down after you’d already cried, when the air finally feels like it belongs to you again.
I was twenty-four, freshly cut off from everything I thought I was supposed to want, living in a too-small apartment and pretending I knew how to sell houses. The song didn’t fix any of it. It just sat in the car with me and didn’t ask me to be smaller or louder or better. It let the bigness of the sky and the smallness of me exist at the same time.
I still play it when the day feels too sharp. It reminds me that staying—really staying—with your own life doesn’t always look like triumph. Sometimes it just looks like not changing the station. Like letting the song finish. Like choosing the same road home even when you’re scared of what’s waiting there.
Salt in the air. Coffee in the hand. And the quiet decision to keep going.
