The Light I Left On

What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

Not the jump-scare kind. The kind that sits in your chest after the credits roll and makes the house feel different.

For me it was The Babadook. I watched it alone in that too-small apartment years ago, lights off, and when it ended I couldn’t turn the lights back on for a while. It wasn’t the monster. It was the way grief and exhaustion can turn a mother into someone she doesn’t recognize. The way love and rage can live in the same room and neither one wins cleanly.

It scared me because it felt possible. Not the creature. The isolation. The shame of not being okay. The fear that if you let anyone see how heavy it is, they’ll leave.

I still think about it when the day feels sharp. It reminds me that the scariest stories aren’t always about what might get you. Sometimes they’re about what you might become if you stop letting people in.

Salt in the air. Coffee in the hand. And the choice to leave the light on anyway.
